Ultrasound uses sound waves, not radiation, so it is safe to repeat and safe in pregnancy. A probe with gel is moved across your abdomen and the picture appears live on the screen.
Doctors order it for stomach pain, jaundice, suspected gallstones, kidney stones, and to check the liver.
Preparation matters for this one. Come after six hours without food — gas in a full stomach blocks the sound and can hide the gallbladder entirely. Drink water and do not empty your bladder just before the scan.

- Fasting and a full bladder
- Six hours without food, and water held in the bladder. Bowel gas hides the gallbladder completely, and an empty bladder cannot be assessed at all. Patients are commonly told only the fasting half of this, and the scan then has to be done again on another day.
- About twenty minutes on the table
- The study takes around 20 minutes and the report is signed the same day. The six hours of fasting beforehand is the longer part of it, which is why a morning slot is easier, since you have not eaten since the night in any case.
- No radiation, so it can be repeated
- There is no X-ray dose in an ultrasound. A liver that looks fatty, or a gallbladder with a small stone sitting in it, is usually watched over months, and repeating the scan adds nothing to your exposure. That is why it comes before a CT for most abdominal complaints.
- The liver bloods on the same visit
- An enlarged or bright liver on the scan raises the question of what the enzymes are doing. The liver function test is ₹500 and is drawn in this building, and you are already fasting for the scan, so it is one visit instead of two.
- ₹1000, with the report included
