What it showsఈ స్కాన్ దేని కోసం
A pelvic ultrasound checks the uterus, the ovaries and the bladder. Doctors order it for irregular or heavy periods, pelvic pain, suspected fibroids or cysts, and as part of fertility assessment.
A full bladder pushes the bowel out of the way and gives a clear window, so drink water an hour beforehand and do not pass urine until after the scan. A transvaginal scan (TVS, ₹1,500) gives a closer view when your doctor asks for it.

- Come with a full bladder
- The bladder is what the sound has to travel through to reach the uterus and ovaries. Without it, bowel gas sits over them and the ovaries are often not seen at all. Drink about a litre of water an hour before and do not pass urine. A half filled bladder is the commonest reason a pelvic scan gets repeated.
- The day of your cycle changes what is measured
- For heavy or irregular periods the endometrial thickness is measured, and that thickness changes through the month. A scan done two days after your period reads differently from one done a week later. Tell us the first day of your last period; it goes on the report so the number can be read properly.
- When a transvaginal scan is needed
- A transvaginal scan puts the probe close to the uterus, so the endometrial lining and small ovarian follicles show up in detail the abdominal view cannot give. If your question needs that detail, it is done in the same sitting, with no second appointment for it.
- The gynaecologist here is a woman
