Each month one follicle in the ovary grows and then releases an egg. The scan is repeated on set days around mid-cycle, and each time the radiologist measures the follicle and the thickness of the lining of the womb. Comparing those readings across the visits shows whether the follicle is growing at the expected rate and whether release has taken place.

Doctors order it for difficulty in conceiving, irregular periods, polycystic ovaries, timing of an insemination, and monitoring while on fertility medicines.
