Air blocks ultrasound, so this scan does not see into the lung itself. What it sees well is fluid collecting around the lung, thickening of the covering membrane, and swelling within the chest wall. When that fluid has to be drawn out with a needle, the scan marks the safest spot and the depth to go in.

Doctors order it for breathlessness, chest pain, a shadow at the base of the lung on an X-ray, suspected fluid around the lung in tuberculosis, pneumonia or heart failure, and to guide a tap of that fluid.
