The probe is passed over the breast and the underarm, and the image separates a solid lump from a fluid-filled cyst, which can feel much the same to the hand. Size, depth and position of anything found are recorded. It works well on dense breast tissue, which is common in younger women, and is often used alongside a mammogram rather than in place of it.

Doctors order it for a lump felt in the breast, pain or swelling on one side, nipple discharge, a change in the skin, and to look further at something seen on a mammogram.
