The probe sits on either side of the neck and shows the wall of the artery along with the blood moving through it. Fatty deposits, called plaque, thicken the wall over years and can narrow the channel; the scan measures that thickening and how much the flow has been squeezed. Both sides are checked and the readings compared.

Doctors order it for a stroke or a passing episode of weakness or slurred speech, giddiness or blackouts, a sound heard in the neck through a stethoscope, and follow-up in long-standing diabetes, high blood pressure or high cholesterol.
