Sound waves are used to see the structures inside the hand — the tendons that move the fingers, the lining of the joints, the nerves at the wrist and any swelling or fluid between them. The person scanning may ask you to bend or straighten your fingers so the tendons can be watched while they move. Nothing is injected and there is no radiation.

Doctors order it for wrist and finger pain, a lump or swelling in the hand, suspected tendon injury, carpal tunnel symptoms such as numbness and tingling, or joint swelling in arthritis.
