Every baby has a thin layer of fluid under the skin at the nape at this stage. The scan measures its thickness in millimetres, checks whether the nasal bone has formed and confirms dates from the crown-to-rump length. The measurement is usually combined with a blood test from the mother to arrive at a risk figure, which is a probability rather than a diagnosis.

Doctors order it for routine first-trimester screening, when the mother is above 35, when a chromosomal condition runs in the family, or after a previous affected pregnancy.
