The probe is placed on the abdomen and the flank to follow the renal artery from where it leaves the main vessel to where it enters the kidney. Speed of flow is measured at several points along the way, since a narrowed segment pushes blood through faster. Readings taken inside the kidney show how much resistance the smaller vessels are offering. Both sides are compared.
