The probe passes over the front and the sides of the neck and shows the thyroid, its size and texture, and any nodule sitting within it. A lump that can be felt is measured and described, and swollen lymph nodes are counted and located. The scan can also guide a needle when a sample from a nodule or a node is required.

Doctors order it for a swelling or lump in the neck, an abnormal thyroid blood test, a goitre, difficulty in swallowing, hoarseness, and follow-up of a known thyroid nodule.
