The mastoid is the bump of bone you can feel behind the ear lobe, and inside it is a set of small air-filled cells connected to the middle ear. The films are taken at set angles on both sides so the cells and the bone between them show clearly. Comparing the two ears is a normal part of reading the film.
Doctors order it for long-standing ear discharge, pain or tenderness behind the ear, hearing loss, or repeated middle ear infection.
