The shoulder is a ball-and-socket joint where the top of the arm bone meets the shoulder blade, with the collar bone joining in above. The front view shows how the ball sits in the socket, and the side view is taken at an angle across the body to show whether it has slipped forwards or backwards. Both shoulders are filmed so the two can be set against each other.

Doctors order it for shoulder pain, restricted arm movement, injury or a fall, and suspected dislocation or arthritis.
