AP means the picture is taken front-to-back and LAT means from the side, and the neck needs both because each hides what the other shows. The side view brings out the curve of the neck, the height of the discs between the vertebrae and the space at the front of the airway. The front view checks the side-to-side line-up.
Doctors order it for neck pain, stiffness on turning the head, tingling in the arms or hands, headache from the neck, and injury.
