The usual chest film is taken front-to-back, and this one is taken sideways to fill in what that view cannot separate. It opens up the area behind the heart and behind the breastbone, and shows the lower corners of the lungs where they meet the diaphragm. The bones of the mid back are also seen along the film.
Doctors order it for a shadow seen on a front chest film, long-standing cough, chest pain, breathlessness, or fluid suspected at the base of a lung.
