Two films are taken from the side, one with the chin tucked down towards the chest and one with the head tipped back. Comparing them shows how the vertebrae move on each other and whether one slides further than it should. A single still picture cannot show this, which is why the movement views are asked for.
Doctors order it for neck pain after injury, a feeling of instability in the neck, and to see how the neck behaves on movement.
