The neck has seven vertebrae stacked between the skull and the upper back. This view, taken from the front, shows how they line up side to side, the gaps between them and the small joints along the edges. It is often taken with the mouth open for one exposure so the topmost two vertebrae, which the jaw otherwise covers, can be seen.

Doctors order it for neck pain, stiffness, pain spreading into the arm, or after an injury to the neck.
