The beam passes from the front of the chest through to the back while you stand against the plate and hold your breath in. It shows the lung fields on both sides, the outline and size of the heart shadow, the ribs and the domes of the diaphragm. Patches of infection, fluid at the base of a lung and a collapsed lung all show up on it.
Doctors order it for a cough that will not settle, fever with breathlessness, chest pain, injury to the ribs, and as part of a pre-employment or pre-operative check.
