A thin tube is placed through the cervix and a small quantity of iodine dye is pushed in. The dye fills the cavity of the womb and travels along both tubes, and pictures taken as it moves show the shape of the cavity and whether the dye spills freely from the open ends. A blocked tube stops it. Cramping during the few minutes it takes is usual.

Doctors order it for difficulty in conceiving, repeated miscarriage, and to check the tubes after surgery on them.
