The dye travels in the blood to the kidneys, which filter it out into the urine. Films are taken at intervals over the following minutes as the dye outlines the collecting system of each kidney, runs down the ureters and fills the bladder. A stone, a narrowing, or a kidney slow to clear the dye shows up across that sequence.
Doctors order it for repeated urinary infections, blood in the urine, suspected stones, and pain in the flank.
