The clavicle runs from the top of the breastbone out to the shoulder and lies just under the skin, which is why it breaks so readily. A single front-to-back picture shows the whole bone, the joint at either end, and whether broken pieces have stayed together or pulled apart and overlapped.
Doctors order it after a fall on the shoulder or an outstretched arm, for a lump felt over the collarbone, and to follow a fracture as it knits.
