Three bones meet at the elbow, the upper arm bone and the two bones of the forearm, and they overlap badly on any single picture. The front view is taken with the arm held straight and the side view with it bent to a right angle. Cracks in children, a dislocated joint and swelling inside the joint are what the radiologist looks for.

Doctors order it after a fall on the arm, for an elbow that will not straighten, painful swelling around the joint, and to check a healing fracture.
