The picture covers the fingers, the long bones of the palm and the small wrist bones at their base. From above the fingers lie flat and separate clearly. The side view shows whether a broken bone has tilted or a joint has slipped out of position. Narrowed joints and eroded bone edges in arthritis are also judged on the hand.

Doctors order it after a fall or a blow to the hand, for a finger that will not bend, painful swollen joints, and to assess bone age in children.
