This one is taken when the front view leaves a question open. Sending the beam across the joint separates the head and neck of the thigh bone from the pelvic bones that lie over them on a front film, so a crack running across the neck, or a head tilted off it, becomes visible. It is usually added to a front view already taken.

Doctors order it to confirm a suspected hip fracture, to see how far a broken bone has shifted, and to follow up after hip surgery.
