The knee is photographed twice, once with the X-ray passing front to back and once across the joint from the side. A hairline crack or a narrowed joint space can hide completely in one direction and stand out clearly in the other. Between the two films the radiologist sees the lower end of the thigh bone, the top of the shin bone and the kneecap.

Doctors order it for knee pain, swelling, injury after a fall or road accident, locking of the joint, and to look at wear that has built up over the years.
