A break in a long bone can look almost normal from the front and be obvious from the side, which is why one film is never enough. The knee end and the ankle end are usually included so nothing at the joints is missed.

Doctors order it for shin pain, a suspected fracture after a fall or accident, swelling of the leg, and to follow how a broken bone is healing.
