The X-ray passes from front to back and shows the ball at the top of the arm bone sitting in its socket on the shoulder blade, along with the outer end of the collar bone. It is the standard first picture taken for shoulder trouble. Fractures, a joint that has slipped out of place and calcium deposits around the tendons all show up on it.

Doctors order it for shoulder pain, restricted movement of the arm, injury after a fall, and suspected dislocation.
