The femur is the longest bone in the body, and the two directions together cover its whole shaft, the narrow neck near the hip and the widened end at the knee. Films are taken from the front and from the side because a crack running lengthwise can be nearly invisible in one direction. Any plate, screw or rod already in the bone is seen as well.

Doctors order it for thigh pain, a suspected fracture after a fall or road accident, limping in children, and follow-up after surgery on the bone.
