Because the shoulder is a ball sitting in a shallow socket, a single front view can make a partly slipped joint look properly seated. The side picture is taken across the body so the ball and socket are seen edge on, which settles whether the joint is in place and shows the shoulder blade more clearly than the front film does.

Doctors order it for a suspected dislocation, injury after a fall, shoulder pain that is not settling, and to check the position of a fracture.
