The front view lines the vertebrae up one above the other and shows whether the spine is leaning to one side. The side view carries the height of each bone, the gaps between them where the discs sit, and whether one vertebra has slipped forward on the one below it. The joint with the sacrum at the bottom of the spine is included.

Doctors order it for persistent low back pain, pain running down the leg, injury to the back, and suspected wear or slippage of the vertebrae.
