Taken standing or lying on your side, this view stacks the lumbar vertebrae in profile, so the height of each bone, the disc spaces between them and the front-to-back alignment can all be read off one film. It is often taken on its own as a follow-up when the front view has already been seen and reported.

Doctors order it for low back pain, follow-up of known wear in the spine, a suspected collapsed vertebra, and to check alignment.
