The seven vertebrae of the neck are photographed from the front and then from the side. The side view carries most of the information: the disc spaces, how each bone lines up on the next, and the width of the soft tissue in front of the spine, which widens when there is swelling there.

Doctors order it for neck pain, stiffness, injury after a fall or accident, pain or numbness travelling into the arm, and suspected wear in the neck.
