The film is centred a little lower than a plain pelvis picture, so the ball and socket of each hip, the neck of both thigh bones and the upper part of their shafts are all included. Having both sides on a single film lets the radiologist hold the painful hip up against the normal one and judge the difference.

Doctors order it for hip pain, limping, a suspected fracture of the hip, and to look at wear or damage to the ball of the joint.
