A contrast dye is introduced at the opening of the urethra and films are taken as it fills the passage from the outside inwards. The dye blocks X-rays, so the shape of the tube is drawn out clearly on the film and any narrowing, tear or false track shows up. It is done mainly in men, in whom the urethra is long.
Doctors order it for a weak or slow urinary stream, a suspected narrowing of the passage, injury to the pelvis or the area below it, and before surgery on the urethra.
