The clavicle runs from the base of the neck out to the point of the shoulder and lies just under the skin, which is why it breaks so easily in a fall onto the shoulder. The film covers the whole length of the bone and both its ends, and shows how far apart the pieces are lying if it has broken.
Doctors order it for pain and a lump over the collar bone after a fall, a suspected fracture, injury in children, and to check that a break is healing.
