The ankle is where the two shin bones grip the bone at the top of the foot, and the bony knobs on either side are a common place to break after a twist. The front view shows the joint space and both knobs, while the side view opens up the back of the joint and the heel bone. Both are needed before a fracture can be ruled out.
Doctors order it for ankle pain after a twist or fall, swelling, being unable to put weight on the foot, and follow-up of a fracture.
