Two side views are taken, one with you bent forwards as far as is comfortable and one arching backwards. Comparing the pair shows whether a vertebra shifts on the one below it when the back moves, and that movement does not appear on an ordinary still picture. It is a test of how steady the spine is rather than of its shape.
Doctors order it for low back pain that changes with position, suspected slipping of a vertebra, and before or after spine surgery.
