The X-ray passes across the knee from one side to the other, so the kneecap, the back of the joint and the space behind it come into view without the thigh and shin bones lying on top of them. This view is often taken on its own when the doctor is following up something already seen on an earlier film, or checking where the kneecap sits.

Doctors order it for pain at the front of the knee, swelling in the joint, follow-up after an injury, and to check the position of the kneecap.
