The beam passes from the front of the knee through to the back, with the leg held straight. It shows the gap between the thigh bone and the shin bone on the inner and the outer side, the surfaces facing each other, and the edges where bony spurs form. Wear of the joint usually appears as narrowing on one side more than the other.

Doctors order it for knee pain and swelling, difficulty in climbing stairs, injury to the knee, and to follow the wear of the joint over time.
