The ball at the top of the thigh bone sits in a socket in the pelvis. The front view shows the width of the joint space, the shape of that ball and the neck of bone below it. The side view is taken with the leg turned or the beam angled across the joint, and it brings out a fracture line or a head that has slipped backwards.

Doctors order it after a fall in an older person, for groin or hip pain on walking, a limp in a child, and suspected loss of blood supply to the hip.
