The foot packs many small bones into a small space. Taken from above, the toe bones and the long bones across the middle of the foot separate out. The side view shows the arch, the heel bone and the height it sits at. A hairline crack, a spur under the heel, or a joint worn away over years will show on these films.

Doctors order it after a stub or a crush injury, for heel pain, pain on walking, swelling across the forefoot, and foot problems arising in diabetes.
