The ankle is where the two bones of the lower leg sit over the talus in the foot. The front view shows the joint space on either side and the tips of both malleoli, the bony knobs you can feel on each side of the ankle. The side view shows the back of the heel bone and whether any bone has shifted out of line.
Doctors order it after a twist or a fall, for swelling that will not settle, pain on putting weight through the foot, and to check a fracture as it heals.
