The thigh bone is the longest bone in the body, so the films are taken to include the hip joint at one end and the knee at the other. The front-to-back view shows the shaft and its alignment; the side view shows any bowing or backward shift that the first cannot pick up. Both are needed to judge the position of a break.

Doctors order it for suspected fracture of the thigh after a fall or road accident, deep thigh pain, limping in children, and follow-up of a bone that is healing.
