The wrist is a cluster of eight small bones sitting between the two forearm bones and the palm. The front picture spreads them out as far as it can; the side picture shows whether the lower end of the forearm bone has been pushed backwards, which is the commonest pattern after a fall on an outstretched hand. Some small wrist bones need extra views later if pain continues.

Doctors order it for wrist pain and swelling after a fall, suspected fracture, restricted movement, and follow-up of a wrist held in a cast.
