Blood is normally sterile. A sample is put into culture bottles and kept warm for several days to see whether any bacteria or fungi grow out of it. Anything that grows is then identified and tested against a range of antibiotics to see which ones stop it, and that second part is the sensitivity in the report.

Doctors order it for high fever with chills, fever that has continued for days without a cause, suspected typhoid, and suspected infection of the bloodstream.
