Pus from a wound, abscess, ear discharge or surgical site is placed on culture media and kept warm for a day or two, so that any organism present multiplies enough to be identified. The same growth is then tested against a panel of antibiotics to see which ones stop it. A report of no growth means nothing multiplied in that time.

Doctors order it for wounds that keep discharging, abscesses and boils, infected surgical sites, ear or eye discharge, and infections that have not settled with the first antibiotic tried.
