The fluid is collected by lumbar puncture, a fine needle placed in the lower back by a doctor, rather than drawn from a vein. In the laboratory it is checked for its appearance, its cell counts, its protein and sugar, and for any organisms growing in it. Shifts in that pattern point towards meningitis, bleeding around the brain, or other illnesses of the nervous system.

Doctors order it for suspected meningitis or encephalitis, and for severe headache or neurological illness where the fluid may explain the cause.
