A biopsy is a piece of tissue removed by the doctor and sent to the laboratory for examination. There it is fixed, set in wax, cut into slices thinner than a hair and stained, then read under a microscope by a pathologist. The report describes what the cells actually are, which is often the point at which a diagnosis becomes definite.

Doctors order it for a lump or swelling of uncertain nature, an abnormal appearance seen on a scan or endoscopy, a skin lesion that is not healing, and confirmation of a suspected cancer.
