A thin needle, much like the one used to draw blood, is passed into the swelling and a small amount of material is pulled into it. That material is spread on glass slides, stained, and read by a pathologist who reports what sort of cells are present. Most people feel a brief sting; there is no cut and no stitch.

Doctors order it for a lump in the breast, thyroid or neck, for enlarged lymph nodes, and for any swelling that needs to be identified before treatment is planned.
