During a brief internal examination a small brush collects cells from the cervix; these are spread, stained and studied under the microscope. The purpose is to find cells that have begun to change long before they cause any symptom, at a stage when they are simple to deal with. Many women have it repeated at intervals their doctor sets.

Doctors order it for routine cervical screening, and for bleeding between periods, after intercourse or after menopause.
