Urea, creatinine and uric acid are all waste products that healthy kidneys strain out of the blood and pass into urine. Taken together they give the doctor a picture of how much filtering work the kidneys are managing. Repeating them at intervals shows whether that has changed since the last visit.

Doctors order it for swelling of the feet or face, reduced urine output, long-standing diabetes or high blood pressure, before contrast scans and surgery, and to keep watch on medicines that affect the kidneys.
